ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ana María Cano Valdizàn is a Peruvian-born visual artist and graphic designer based in Colombia. Her fascination with the human face began in childhood, leading her from drawing to painting.

BIOGRAPHY

She studied Graphic Design in Bogotá in the 1980s and later trained in oil painting at the Casa de la Cultura de Buga. After a period away from painting, she resumed her artistic practice in 2013, exploring oil, acrylic, and mixed media.

Her work embraces expressive forms, loose brushwork, bold color, and imperfection, moving away from strict realism. Her artistic language combines Figurative Expressionism, Pop Noir, and Mixed Media, with occasional surreal elements. Through her art, she explores emotion, memory, identity, and the passage of time, seeking to create an emotional connection with the viewer.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work reflects my life, emotions, and personal journey. It arises from a free-spirited vision that seeks beauty in all things, deeply influenced by music, memories, and lived experience.

The human figure is central to my practice. I often portray figures from the front or back, as well as flowers, braids, butterflies, angels, and occasionally the sea—elements I interpret as symbols of transformation, light, and renewal. Faces and gazes hold a special significance, becoming intimate portals of emotion and silent storytelling.

My technique combines loose brushwork, bold lines, and a vibrant color palette. I move fluidly between figuration and subtle touches of abstraction, guided more by intuition than by strict formal rules. Rather than adhering to specific movements or fixed references, I let each piece evolve organically, maintaining a coherent yet deeply personal visual language.

My work has been presented in solo and collective exhibitions in Colombia and internationally.
